Fully off-grid design is a different discipline from rooftop solar — generation, storage and backup have to be matched to every half-hour of the site’s demand. Few UK installers do this work. Novalux has already delivered it, three ways:
- Perfectly matched — R.S. Cockerill, Link Hall. 81kWp of solar and a 200kWh battery run borehole irrigation entirely off-grid: a full day’s pumping on zero grid import, 12 hours running with 8 hours in reserve, and the backup generator left on standby.
- Fully independent — Whitebarn. Our first completely off-grid farm, powered by solar and storage alone.
- Flexible by design — Bradley Farm. One system, two modes: it runs on-grid when the grid makes sense and off-grid when it doesn’t — the same design flexes with the site.

Off-grid power FAQs
Yes. Solar generates through the day, the battery carries evenings and overnight loads, and a backup generator covers extended dull periods. We size all three from your half-hourly consumption so the site stays powered year-round.
Yes. The system can run in hybrid mode: your limited grid supply covers baseload while solar and storage carry the peaks. If the connection improves later, the same equipment simply changes role.
Connection upgrades are commonly quoted in years. An off-grid or hybrid system is typically designed, consented and installed within months — we will give you a realistic programme at feasibility stage.
It depends on what you are displacing — diesel generation, a costly connection offer, or lost production. We model payback from your own data and are honest if the numbers do not stack up.
